Jen’s Quick Take on First Wife’s Shadow

- First Wife’s Shadow starts off with a classic Gothic (or domestic suspense) premise of a woman with a new husband who is being terrorized by someone or something!
- I loved the reverse age gap and the gender flip from the typical Gothic, making the female character 10+ years older and much more wealthy than the guy.
- First Wife’s Shadow starts out on familiar domestic suspense ground and then suddenly goes off in some very unexpected directions
- Yes, there were some improbabilities, but if you love this genre and want something you haven’t read before, this is for you!
- Publication date: March 18, 2025 by Mira Books. Thanks to the publisher for the advance copy. I read this book in March 2025.

The Premise of First Wife’s Shadow
Emma is in her late 40s and has resigned herself to being the “auntie” to her friends’ children and creating a single life she enjoys. She has a beautiful, isolated house with a pool and a job she loves.
One day at a conference she meets Matthew, a very attractive photographer. He’s a bit younger than she is, but sparks fly.
Matthew is still mourning the loss of his wife in a tragic accident. Despite Emma’s friends’ warnings to slow down, she and Matthew speed up.
And then strange things start happening….
